Climate Projection and Downscaling for Adaptation Planning

Introduction:

Future climate projections and downscaling provide essential data and information for policymakers and communities to appropriately assess targeted vulnerabilities, design resilient infrastructure, and implement effective adaptation strategies. This interactive tutorial is designed to bridge the gap between complex climate science and practical applications. Participants will begin with a clear overview of global climate modeling and downscaling techniques, followed by a guided introduction to key data sources, standard file formats, and essential analytical tools. Through hands-on exercises, participants will learn how to extract relevant climate datasets and compute sector-specific climate indices using available tools. The session will conclude with a practical discussion to review the methodologies covered and address any questions arising from the hands-on exercises.

Showcase of R Can Show You The World

Introduction:

R and the R Commander (Rcmdr) interface offer accessible yet powerful tools for data management, visualization, and statistical analysis — making them ideal for researchers and practitioners looking to strengthen their quantitative skills without deep programming experience. This interactive workshop is designed to bridge the gap between statistical concepts and practical data workflows. Participants will begin with a clear overview of the R environment and the Rcmdr graphical interface, followed by a guided introduction to core R objects, data import/export, and essential manipulation techniques. Through hands-on exercises, participants will learn how to visualize data using a range of plot types and perform fundamental statistical analyses — including correlation, regression, and hypothesis testing — using Rcmdr's menu-driven tools. The session will conclude with a practical review of the methodologies covered and an open discussion to address any questions arising from the hands-on exercises.
