Goodbye Professor Roslan

On the 30th of March 2015, UMBI bade farewell to Associate Professor Dr. Roslan Harun who is the longest-serving senior research fellow. Prof. Roslan has taken his optional ‘retirement’ from government service but will continue serving the public as a respiratory physician at a private hospital in Kuala Lumpur. Prof. Roslan belongs to the rare breed of clinician-scientists i.e. those with MD and PhD. He is credentialed as a respiratory physician and also has a PhD in molecular biology. He was the first research fellow to join UMBI when it was formed in July 2003 and has contributed tremendously to the development of the institute. He truly believed that UMBI would flourish by focusing on molecular medicine which is already forming the basis of genomics medicine in practice. His research interest is in molecular basis of diseases including respiratory diseases and cancers. He is also very adept in bioinformatics and is the key resource person for this important discipline in UMBI. Prof. Roslan has trained many post-graduate students (MSc and PhD) whilst he was in UMBI. He has served well both as a deputy director as well as the head of quality. He is well-liked by everyone in UMBI. His unique relatively quiet demeanour, which can be deceiving, has become a trademark. He is always humble but when he speaks he does so with authority and facts which are really based on his deep knowledge of molecular biology. website Harmonica Linea He is a great role model of a researcher and will continue to be an inspiration to us all at UMBI. He will be sorely missed by all of us. UMBI has not only lost an outstanding researcher but also a very close friend. Goodbye Prof. Roslan and we wish you and your family the very best. May Allah grant you excellent health and an even more successful future.
